More About The Program
Come join us for the Lens on Climate Change filmmaking workshop
a Gunnison Summer Experience

Come learn about filmmaking while investigating how climate change is changing your community. The Lens on Climate Change program is a chance for you to work with scientists and film makers to produce your own film. Get experience acting, directing and editing a film that will impact your community’s resilience. This course will be offered in partnership with the Summer Experiences and CIRES (a partnership between NOAA and CU Boulder) and some activities will take place at the Coldharbour Ranch property. This project is part of an NSF-funded research program that aims to study how filmmaking increases student learning and engagement with science and technology.

Workshop dates: Monday, July 16 – Saturday, July 21, 2018
sign up through Gunnison Summer Experience

Students meet daily with their group from 9am to 4pm at Gunnison Middle School and must bring a lunch and water bottle each day. Morning and afternoon snacks are provided.

Monday Climate Science Exploration
Students get an introduction to climate science with hands-on activities to help them understand the impact of climate change on Colorado.
Tuesday Topic Definition and Research
Students decide on topics for their films and are introduced to resources to help them create a story around their topics.
Wednesday Introduction to Film
Students learn about different film styles and techniques and gain familiarity with the film equipment they will use for their projects. Students will also create storyboards and write their scripts.
Thursday Filming
Students decide on locations and spend the day capturing footage for their films.
Friday Editing
Following the storyboard, students learn how to edit their films. Students also learn about fair use and copyright policies for music and other licensed materials. This day may also be used to re-record sound and film components as needed.
Saturday Final editing and screening event
Students give and receive feedback from other groups and use it to make final edits to their films. In the afternoon, films will be shown in a public screening event. If students complete their films ahead of schedule, an update will be sent to parents letting them know that Saturday morning attendance is not necessary.

All films will be screened during a public film screening to which parents and the community are invited.
The final screening event will be held at the Gunnison Middle School.
