S.E.E.D. Sustainability Education Equity and Diversity
The goal for SEED is to ensure that disadvantaged youth in our valley are able to attain a college degree at Western State Colorado University (WSCU) and meaningful work so that they can help create a sustainable future for themselves, the Gunnison Valley, and beyond. This includes providing a place where nontraditional, historically disadvantaged students have a "home". A place where they belong, where they are not "examples", a place where they are safe, where expectations are appropriate (yet high) in light of all circumstances. It is a place where they are simply an integral part of the Coldharbour mission. It is also a place that fosters their close cultural connections to their families and communities while engaging in higher education toward degree in sustainability.
Specific program objectives are the following:
Increase acceptance rates of local high school graduates who come from disadvantaged backgrounds into WSCU programs with applicability to sustainability professions, the WSCU ENVS program in particular, but also including science, education, etc.
Increase graduation rate of disadvantaged students out of WSCU and the ENVS program.
Enhance job readiness for students so that they are able to secure meaningful employment in their chosen sustainability field upon graduation.
