Coldharbour Fridays: The focus of these six Fridays will be encouraging the students to see the world around them both from an artistic and scientific lens. During the Art & Science Camps students will be engaged through hands - on experiential learning. In the morning they will utilize art to explore the natural world around them through a variety of different art mediums and senses. In the afternoon they will perform science experiments to nurture curiosity and problem solve. During each of these sessions Coldharbour staff/teachers hope to foster a sense of wonder and exploration. Most of the days the students and teachers will be out on the Coldharbour Institute Ranch property 7 miles east of town. Campers will have access to the Tomichi Creek, towering Cottonwoods and Willows, and green spaces to run, play, and learn. While not at the ranch they will take field trips to sites throughout the Gunnison Valley.
Friday, June 10: Art/Science Units - In the morning students will learn about different art mediums from painting to storytelling. Throughout the week the students will use these different art mediums in the various art projects they'll be working on. In the afternoon they'll dive into topics like the scientific method and the branches of science. During this time the teachers will utilize science experiments to show students that science can be both challenging and fun.
Friday, June 17: Art/Science Units - In the morning students will participate in art projects regarding soil health and food production (e.g., making paint from different types of muds). In the afternoon they will do science experiments testing what healthy versus unhealthy soil looks like and tour Mountain Roots Farm.
Friday, June 24: Art/Science Units - In the morning students will participate in art projects regarding water and air (e.g., creating watercolor paint from invasive species). In the afternoon they will participate in Coldharbour's River Watch Program where they'll be testing things like water velocity, pH, and hardness.
Friday, July 8: Art/Science Units - In the morning students will go on a hike and along the way they will collect materials like leaves on the ground to make art projects when they return to the ranch. During this time, they will also get a chance to make imprints of animal tracks that they find along the way. In the afternoon the students will be led by a graduate student checking the different trail cams spread throughout the ranch after which the graduate student will lead science experiments from the data they collected.
Friday, July 15: Art/Science Units - In the morning the students learn about renewable and non-renewable energy. They will get to measure a person's carbon footprint and also participate in our ESS Program. In the afternoon they will build and race solar powered racecars!
Friday, July 22: Art/Science Units - On this last Friday Camp students will get the opportunity to create their own art projects and science experiments. They will then present their art projects and lead us in the science experiments they made.
Week - Long Sustainability Camp: The focus of the Week - Long Camp will be art and science, building off of what they learned during Fridays. In the mornings they will do art projects from making art from trash to creating their own paints from invasive weeds. In the afternoons they will participate in science experiments from doing citizen science with Coldharbour Institute's graduate students to learning about how wetlands are sponges on the 334 - acre Coldharbour Institute property. This week will be full of exploration and fun! Students do NOT need to attend Coldharbour Fridays to be able to participate in the Week - Long Camp. Dates for the Week - Long are August 15 - 19.
