Youth Education

Cultivating a love of  land
Caring for our environment starts with knowing the land. At Coldharbour, we connect kids to the landscapes through hands-on, interactive educational programming designed to inspire curiosity about the (eco)system connections all around them.
Check out our programmatic offerings below!
Wetland and Riparian Plants
Like the people who live here, the plants that grow in the Gunnison Valley must be adaptable and resilient. Wander our Native Plant Nursery-the only native nursery in the Gunnison Valley-and explore the role plants play in supporting diverse and healthy wetland ecosystems.

Lessons
K-5: Planting a Seed
6-8: Native and Invasive Species
9-12: Biological Survey Skills
Landscape Histories
As long as people have called the valley home, they have responded to and shaped the land in concert with shifting seasons and climates. Follow plants, animals, rivers, and people as they move across the landscape and examine how their movements or decisions impact the surrounding environment.

Lessons
K-5: Our Migration Corridor
6-8: Who lives here?
9-12: Oxbows, Alluvium, and Erosion, Oh My!
Soil
Who knew dirt was so complicated? Hidden below every footstep is a dynamic, complex web of minerals and nutrients that help grow our food, clean our water, and store atmospheric carbon. Get your hands muddy investigating the hidden world just under the surface!

Lessons
K-5: Worms and Dirt
6-8: Geology and the Rock Cycle
9-12: Soil Structure
Stream Health
Water is life! Caring for our streams is caring for our community. Caring for our community is caring for our streams. Discover where water comes from and where it goes, and consider who it impacts along its course.

Lessons
K-5: Macroinvertebrate Mayhem
6-8: The Water Cycle
9-12: Water Quality Testing
Riparian Restoration
There are many ways to keep our rivers healthy–and people, plants, and animals all play a role. Peek into a beaver dam or enjoy the shade of a willow tree while learning about solutions we can all be part of.

Lessons
K-5: All About Beavers
6-8: Streambank Restoration
9-12: Wetland Delineation
